Green coffee berry extract does contain some caffeine. Several studies have shown that caffeine can boost metabolism by up to 3-11% (3, 4). However, the most active ingredient is believed to be chlorogenic acid. Some human studies suggest that it can reduce the absorption of carbohydrates from the alimentary canal, which lowers blood glucose and insulin spikes (5, 6). If this is often true, then taking green coffee extract would be like eating a rather lower carbohydrate diet. Other studies (in mice and rats) have shown that chlorogenic acid can reduce weight, reduce fat absorbed from the diet, reduce fat stored within the liver and improve the function of the fat-burning hormone adiponectin (7, 8).
